ABOUT US

Phillips-Tuftex began its remarkable journey in the heart of Nuneaton, a town renowned for its industrious spirit, during the early 1880s. Founded by Alfred William Phillips, the company made history by producing the world’s first hand-stitched tennis ball, setting a standard for craftsmanship and quality that would endure for generations.

The company first opened its doors at Albion Buildings, a proud example of Victorian-era industrial architecture. Located in the bustling centre of Nuneaton, Albion Buildings was more than just a workplace—it was a hub of creativity and innovation. The building, with its robust brickwork and large windows, reflected the period’s emphasis on functional yet inspiring industrial design. Inside, skilled craftsmen worked meticulously to ensure every product met the highest standards of quality.

During the First World War, Phillips-Tuftex demonstrated its adaptability by shifting its focus to producing hand-stitched footballs and rugby balls. Many of these were supplied to the armed forces, providing troops with a vital means of recreation and camaraderie during difficult times.

In 1914, the Tuftex trademark was established, cementing the company’s commitment to excellence. Over the years, Phillips-Tuftex expanded its range of products to include not only its iconic balls but also a variety of sports equipment. This diversification laid the foundation for a brand that became synonymous with innovation and superior craftsmanship.

Today, Phillips-Tuftex proudly supplies its extensive range of sports and activity goods to the whole of the UK. We work alongside leading organisations such as YPO, Sports Directory, and ESPO, ensuring our products reach schools, clubs, and communities nationwide. This partnership with such prominent names reflects our reputation for quality and reliability.

The company has continued to grow, offering an extensive selection of fitness equipment, sensory tools, and bespoke kit packages. True to its roots, Phillips-Tuftex remains dedicated to encouraging sports and team activities for individuals of all ages and abilities, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and participation.

Although Albion Buildings has evolved over time, its legacy as the birthplace of Phillips-Tuftex endures. The company stands as a lasting testament to the vision of Alfred William Phillips and the industrious heritage of Nuneaton, continuing to inspire communities through its commitment to sport and recreation.
